Born on May 25, 1927, Amalia entered the world in Manatí, Puerto Rico. The seventh child of parents, Francisco and Clementina Pinzón (Robles), Amalia lived in Puerto Rico until she was 18 years of age when she left the island upon an invitation from her brother to join him in Chicago.
Amalia’s brother, Dolores, worked with friend, Braulio Vicente, whose handsome, young brother-in-law also had recently moved to Chicago from San Sebastián, Puerto Rico. His name was Ángel Jiménez. Dolores and Braulio invited Amalia and Ángel to join them at a local carnival and the young couple immediately hit it off and were married in November 1951. While in Chicago, the young couple welcomed sons David and Gary to their family.
Ángel was accepted to nursing school at Madison College in Madison, Tennessee in 1957. While Ángel studied, Amalia worked tirelessly to support her young family. Despite the many challenges, Ángel graduated with a degree in anesthesia and returned to Puerto Rico to fulfill his obligation for a government scholarship he’d received. While in Puerto Rico, two additional sons were born, Ron and Bob, to complete the family.
The family arrived in Avon Park in 1967 where both Ángel and Amalia worked at Walker Memorial Hospital (now AdventHealth Sebring). The family moved to Orlando in the late ‘70s where Amalia worked in Central Supply at Florida Hospital Altamonte (now AdventHealth Altamonte) for ten years. Amalia eventually returned to Avon Park to retire, quickly re-engaging with her many friends, family, and church community.
Amalia was vivacious and tenacious – a lover of life with a wonderful sense of humor. She loved her sons and grandchildren more than anything and often would brag about her family to anyone who would listen. She was a consummate cook, a ruthlessly competitive domino player, the life of the party and she will be tremendously missed.
Amalia is survived by her sons, David (Carolyn), Gary (Darlyn), Ron (Lisa) and Bob (Julie) and grandchildren, Laura, Christina (José), Ronnie (Courtney), Brooke (Rob), Colton, Jack, Jayce, Josh, Emmie and five great-grandchildren. A graveside service is scheduled for 10:30 am, Sunday, October 1, at Bougainvillea Cemetery, 591 US Hwy 27, Avon Park, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Walker Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1410 W. Avon Blvd, Avon Park, FL 33825.
