William S. Lynch, age 88, a longtime resident of Alexandria, Virginia died on July 13, 2015 at his home. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara; his sons, Kevin of Charlottesville, Stephen and his wife Meghan of Alexandria, Daniel and his wife Melissa of Alexandria, and daughter Anne and her husband Paul Buellesbach of Fairfax. He is survived by 12 grandchildren; Joseph, Stephen, Lauren and Ryan Buellesbach, William, Benjamin, Thomas, Owen and Logan, Devin, Carson and Ava Lynch. Born December 5, 1926 in New York City, he was a graduate of Bishop Loughlin High School. He served in the V5 Navy Aviator Program during WWII. He attended Fordham University and Harvard Law. William became an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He joined the Department of Justice at the request of Attorney General Robert Kennedy to work in the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section. William was one of the key federal prosecutors in the 1960s assigned specifically to combat organized crime; this was the beginning of the long and successful program to eradicate the mob. William became Chief, Organized Crime and Racketeering Section, in 1969 and remained in that capacity until 1976. It was during his tenure as Chief that federal prosecutors began bringing the first great prosecutions against mob families throughout the United States. He later headed the Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Section, followed by assignment as a special Trial Attorney for the criminal division specializing in high-profile cases. William retired from the Department of Justice in 1994. He was an active parishioner of Saint Mary’s Church in Alexandria. He served as presidents of both the Old Town Civic Association and the Old Town Walled Garden Club. He was Vice Chairman of Alexandria Parks and Recreation Commission, and was active in Alexandria city soccer and scouting programs. Visitation will be held at Demaine’s Funeral Home, 520 South Washington Street, Alexandria, VA, Sunday July 19th from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 310 South Royal Street, Alexandria, VA, Monday July 20th at 1:30 PM.
