On Saturday, May 17, 2014, Richard "Dick" Flaherty, died at his home in Alexandria, Virginia, surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his wife of twelve years, Cathleen Flaherty; daughters Maureen (William) Crone of Portsmouth, Virginia; Kathleen (Michael) Savage of Alexandria; Eileen (Daniel) Daly of Fairfax Station; Mary (Christopher) Payant of Springfield; son Sean (Caroline) Flaherty of Alexandria; stepsons Lance (Andrea) Horne of Lakewood, Ohio, and Andrew (Ashley) Horne of Baku, Azerbaijan; stepdaughter Suzanne Galyon of Manassas; eleven grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. Dick is also survived by his first wife of twenty-seven years, Mary Flaherty of Alexandria and his sister Patricia (Stephen) Siragusa of Nellysford, Virginia. Commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1961, he served combat duty in the Bay of Pigs invasion and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a Marine through and through.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Alexandria, Virginia. A viewing will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. All friends and family are invited to celebrate Dick's life at a lunch reception immediately following the Mass on Thursday. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dick's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
