We were classmates at St. John's and fraternity brothers. He went to Regis HS as did my sons. Recall his enthusiasm about the Marines and PLC, "I love the Corps, I love the Corps, I think I'll ship for 20 more." Fair winds and following seas.

On behalf of the staff @ the Wound Center @ Georgetown University Hospital, we are saddened to hear of Mr. Flaherty's passing. He was adored by all of us. Dick's smiling face will truly be missed. We are thinking of you, Cay. Much love to the Flaherty family.

Flaherty's professionalism and his sincere interest in developing leaders of Marines during a very trying period of our beloved Corps. As a Mustang, who before basic school had previously served in Nam, I am the same age as many of the Basic School Platoon Leader's so often enjoyed memorable "off the record" chats with some of the leaders and instructors. I salute Lt.Col. Flaherty, and extend my utmost condolences to his family as well as his Marine family. Semper Fi!

I too was privileged to be a member of Lt. Col. Flaherty's Echo-4 platoon from October 1966 to March 1967. He was a fine role model and leader. He trained all of us thoroughly and prepared us to properly lead our Marines. He will be remembered by those he lead and trained.

I had the distinct honor to be one of Lt. Col (Captain) Flaherty's Echo-4 Marines in 1966-67.  I never forgot him and never will.  As we approached the 2011 Reunion for 3-67, I made it my personal mission to find him.  I did.  The disappointment is that he was nearby for 35 years and I did not know it. My visits to him just before and after the Reunion were full of "scuttlebutt" and other great Marine stories.  Soft spoken and a gentlemen, with a ready smile when needed. He leaves a great family and a "quiver full" of grandchildren. HAND SALUTE and Semper Fi, SIR.

Then Captain Flaherty took  40 + young, raw young men of "E" Company 3/67 and gave us the skills to be Marine officers.  We will always remember his strength but kindness and concern for each of us.  Thanks Dick for a job well done.  Semper Fi.

Losing a parent is so difficult and I am so sorry that your dad has passed at such a young age. He left a very important legacy...really good children who are making a difference as he did as well.

May those who grieve be comforted.Dick has passed on to his final reward but his Marine Corps associates will always remember him,especially TBS 3-67.Let us remember.

I am truly sorry for your loss.  At times like this we really need just the right words in order to comfort those who grieve.  I hope the promises at Isaiah 65:20 will give you that comfort.

Some memories do not fade away.  Dick Flaherty was one of the good guys leading new Lieutenants through The Basic School at Quantico during the Vietnam War in the late '60s.  And he did it well.  He served the Marine Corps very proudly.  Glad to have known him.  Semper Fi.

Dick and Cathleen made a special effort to attend our TBS 3-67 Quantico reunion back in October 2011 as well our class memorial dedication in 2012. He was a special leader for us at the Basic School and he still was 45 years later. God speed, fair winds and following seas. Semper Fi
