A native of Washington D.C. passed away surrounded by her friends.
Mrs. Miles was Secretary to the Auditor General of the Air Force when she was chosen to be the
Secretary-Administrative Assistant to the Under Secretary of the Air Force. She served during the tenure
of four Under Secretaries, seven Assistant Secretaries and then was chosen to serve in the same capacity
to the Director of Defense Research and Engineering of the Department of Defense, which she retired
from in 1973.
After retiring from the Department of Defense, she became a world traveler and was one of the
earliest Westerners to visit China after President Nixon opened it.
Mrs. Miles was married to the late Colonel Francis H. Miles who made the N. African landing
with General Patton in World War II, and commanded the Industrial College of the Armed Forces among
other assignments. She had one son, James (deceased) by a previous marriage. He was adopted by
Colonel Miles. Since 1959, she has resided in Villamay, South of Alexandria, where she had been active
in the Women's Club and the Garden Club.
Mrs. Miles spent her vacations at her summer home on Long Island, Maine, where she enjoyed
boating, fishing and playing bridge..
Mrs. Miles was a member of the Army and Navy Club of Washington, D.C.
