A 44-year resident of Alexandria, VA, John died of cancer at age 87 on March 18, 2016. Born in Toledo, OH, he served a distinguished 28-year military career, flying as bombardier or navigator on 175 combat missions in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross and five Air Medals among other honors. After military retirement, he worked for 15 years as a mechanical engineer. John was a talented craftsman, an avid sportsman, a voracious reader, a world traveler and a passionate enthusiast for aviation. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Lona Tanner, three children, John Tanner (Melissa) and Susan Scanlon (James) of Fairfax, VA and James Tanner (Yvonne) of Northbrook, IL, as well as 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held at 3:00 PM on July 28 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Alexandria. He will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on July 29. Services will begin at 9:00 AM at Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel. From the south on I-95 - Inside the Capital Beltway, 1-95 becomes 1-395. Proceed north toward Washington. Take Exit 8A (7 miles inside the Beltway), marked "Washington Boulevard, Route 27." Bear left on the ramp, following the signs. Exit Washington Boulevard to the right at the exit marked "Fort Myer Only."
From the District of Columbia - Take 1-395 out of the city and into Virginia. Pass the Pentagon and take Exit 8A for Washington Boulevard. Proceed on Washington Boulevard and take the exit marked "Fort Myer Only" on the right.
From the West on Interstate-66 – Take I-66 East and US Route 50 East (Arlington Boulevard) to South Washington Boulevard in Arlington. Take US 50 East and merge onto I-66 East via the ramp on the left to Washington; Take exit 64A to merge onto I-495
South toward Richmond; then take exit 50 A-B to merge onto US 50 East toward
Arlington. Exit onto South Washington Boulevard toward Pentagon/I-395 the
Washington Boulevard exit to South Courthouse Road to 2nd Street South, Arlington, and straight into Hatfield Gate.
From the North on the Capital Beltway (I-495) – Follow I-495 West and keep left to stay on I-495 West; Take Exit 43-44 for Va-193 – George Washington Memorial Parkway/ Georgetown Pike toward Great Falls, Virginia/Langley/Washington. Keep right at the fork to continue on Exit 43, follow signs for George Washington Memorial Parkway/ Washington onto George Washington Memorial Parkway; take I-66 East/US 50 exit toward Roosevelt Bridge/Washington/Rosslyn. Keep right, follow signs for US
50/Rosslyn. Continue on Arlington Boulevard and drive to the Washington Boulevard
toward Pentagon/I-395 exit on the right. Take Washington Boulevard to the South
Courthouse Road/2nd Street South exit on the right. Turn left on South Courthouse
Road and left onto 2nd Street. The 2nd Street Bridge will lead directly to Hatfield Gate.
