John P. Martyn, 91, of Alexandria, Virginia, died on November 18, 2013. John was born in Washington, DC on August 17, 1922. He volunteered and served as a gunner on a B24 Liberator in the 13th Squadron, US Army Air Corps in WWII. Following his military service, he attended American University and in 1948 married Maude E. Gray of Danville, Pennsylvania. He retired in 1984, enjoying his sailboat and visits to Ocean City. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Mt. Vernon Country Club as well as the American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 65 years and his three children, John (Celia) Martyn, Jr.; Catherine (Thomas Schrichte) Ferguson; and Sherry (Stephen) Martyn Bernal. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Nicole, Jeffrey, and Eric Martyn and Christopher Ferguson. The viewing will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2013, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 6510 Fort Hunt Rd., Alexandria, VA 22307 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Funeral services and fellowship will follow. Private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Messiah Lutheran Church.
