John William Hayes
Of Alexandria, VA died on Wednesday, September 11, 2013.
Born to James Fuller Hayes and Helen Lula Turk in Arlington, VA. John graduated from Washington and Lee High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Margaret M. Walker on November 26, 1947 at Walker’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Arlington. They became Charter Members of Heritage Presbyterian Church in Alexandria when it officially organized on April 8, 1962 and have been active ever since.
John is survived by his daughter, Diana H. Rust of Winchester, VA. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jennifer R (Gary) Webber of Roanoke, James S. “Rusty” Rust of Winchester, VA, Allison R. (Jesse) Southall of Covington, VA and Caroline R. (Brian) Sandy of Winchester, VA. Also twelve great-grandchildren: Kirsten, Rebecca, Katy and Hannah Webber; Jake and Morgan Rust; Trenton Rust, Emileigh and Taylin Southall; and Blake, Audrey and Brooke Sandy.
John was predeceased by his wife Margaret M. Hayes; son William R. Hayes, and siblings; James R. Hayes, Harry T. Hayes and Ruth J. Evans.
Friends may call the Demaine Funeral home, 520 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 where the family will be present on Sunday, September 15th from 6-8:00pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 16th at 11:00am at Heritage Presbyterian Church, 8503 Ft. Hunt Road, Alexandria, VA 22308 with interment to follow at Mt. Comfort Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Heritage Presbyterian Church or the charity of one’s choice.
