U.S. Marine Corps (Ret)
On 20 November 2011, Harold (Hal) A. Hayes, age 94, of The Fairfax, Fort Belvoir, VA, died peacefully surrounded by loving family.
Hal served 26 years in the U.S. Marine Corps before retiring from active duty in 1967. Upon his retirement, he was employed with Computer Science Corporation for one year before returning to the federal government with the Naval Intelligence Command as a Civil Service employee. He retired a second time in 1983.
Hal, a member of America's Greatest Generation, was born and raised in Indiana, graduating from Indiana University in 1941 with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration. While on active duty with the Marine Corps, he graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces with a Masters degree in Marketing, and from George Washington University with a Masters degree in Business Administration.
Hal enlisted in the Marine Corps in May 1941 and received his commission in November of that year. His Marine Corps career included the campaigns of Guadalcanal, Saipan and Iwo Jima in World War II, the Korean War, and in Vietnam where he served both as the III MAF G-4 and Commanding Officer of the 3rd Marine Regiment. Peace time tours included teaching logistics at the Marine Corps Educational Center, Quantico, VA; Commanding Officer, Marine Barracks, Key West, FL, The Little White House, during President Truman's numerous visits; and as a staff officer in the Headquarters, U.S. European Command in Paris, France. Military decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, and various unit and area campaign ribbons.
While fighting with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific, Hal met his future wife Mary Anita (Anita) in Hawaii where she was a nurse at Hilo Memorial Hospital. They married in San Diego, CA in 1945 and spent 65 years together raising one son and three daughters.
Hal was recently preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Anita Hayes (25 April 2011) and by his son, Harold (Skipp) Arthur Hayes, III in September 2006.
Hal is survived by daughters Heidi Hayes Bopp of Alexandria, VA, Jill Hayes (Dan) Nofziger of Wilmington, NC, Laurie Hayes (Jay) Gerrard of Poway, CA; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.
Funeral services with Full Military Honors will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 10:45am at Fort Meyer Old Post Chapel with interment to follow at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
