Evelyn Anne Manning was born on May 3, 1944 to Jack and Sophie Mowbray. She was raised in Alexandria, VA and attended Mt. Vernon High School (Class of 1962). She spent one year at Catholic University before attending the Washington School for Secretaries. She worked at Washington Gas as a secretary and administrative assistant in the Gas Supply department in Springfield, VA until her retirement.
Evelyn was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and grammy. She was the room mom in elementary school who turned her love of baking into holiday themed treats and the team mom for the various sports teams organizing game snacks and end of season parties. She was thrilled to become a grammy. She loved spoiling her grandkids and being a major part of their lives. She will be greatly missed.
Evelyn believed in always looking your best. Her idea of casual clothing was a simple dress or slacks outfit with matching jewelry and 2 inch heels or fancy sandals. She shared her love of nice clothes and jewelry with her mom and sister. They could often be found shopping together at Neiman Marcus and a trip to Ocean City, MD was never complete without stopping at the St. John Knits outlet in Queenstown.
Evelyn was a lifetime member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Alexandria, VA. She was active in the youth group and continued serving them into adulthood as a member of various committees. She enjoyed being a part of the hospitality team serving treats after Sunday services and decorating the new entryway after renovations.
Evelyn is survived by her sister, Janice Menker, her daughter, Shana Higginbotham, her son-in-law, Andy Higginbotham, her grandchildren, Tyler, Jeremy, and Amber Higginbotham, and her nephews, Tom and Steve Menker. She will also be missed by her son’s widow, Regina Manning, and her children David Warriner, Jr and Regina Stansfield, whom Evelyn loved as her own grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Sophie Mowbray, her husband, George Manning, and her son, Jason Manning.
Evelyn passed away in her home on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. Visitation will be at Demaine Funeral Home in Alexandria, VA on Monday, December 18 from 2-4 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Nativity Lutheran Church, 1300 Collingwood Rd, Alexandria, VA on Tuesday, December 19 at 11 am followed by a reception.
