Throughout her life, she reflected strong family values instilled by family members and friends. She graduated from the Hellenic Academy in Lowell and Lowell High School. Elaine met her husband, COL (RET) Arthur Daoulas, at an early age while visiting close family friends. They were very happily married for 66 years, separated only by death.
Sadly, Elaine was predeceased by her two sisters (Betty and Dottie), her daughter in law Sue Hardy and son John. Elaine is survived by her husband; son Bill; grandson Arthur; daughter-in-law Emily Paquin; and great granddaughter Quin. Further survivors are granddaughter Arianna; her husband Alex Muckerman; and great granddaughter Poppy. Elaine was the epitome of an Army wife with a commitment to assuring that the families of servicemen and servicewomen were supported in every way possible. Her strong will, devotion, and determination enabled her to handle all family responsibilities alone while her husband was away on hardship tours or at war. She was active in the Army community serving as a Boy Scout Den Mother; Toastmistress Club Member; Family Sponsor; Group Escort and other activities.
She enjoyed traveling abroad, interacting with the wives of foreign officers along with exposure to various cultures. Conversely, Elaine was involved with the hosting of foreign officers and their wives on US assignments. Elaine had the opportunity to step into history, for example: touring the post war Germany Brandenburg Gates; observing first-hand the 1967 Military Coup in Athens, Greece; and her husband’s San Francisco welcome home greeting upon returning from Vietnam.
Subsequent to his military retirement, her husband accepted a Senior Executive Service (SES) appointment and served in the position of Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research, Development and Acquisition (ASARDA). Thrust into a different environment, again she excelled. Her skilled interpersonal relations were of great importance. This was evident at important social functions involving senior military and high level government personnel.
Elaine will be most remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her extreme strength of will and character, and her extensive and long-lasting friendships. The Funeral Service will be held at the Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral located at 2815 36th Street NW, Washington, DC 20007 on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at 1230pm. Rather than flowers, the family requests that Memorial donations be made directly to the Saint Sophia Cathedral in memory of Elaine J. Daoulas.
