Doreen Simons Zaccagnino, a long-time resident of Alexandria, VA, passed away suddenly at her home on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at the age of 69. She and her husband William “Bill” Zaccagnino, shared their bond of deep love during their 50 years of marriage.
Doreen was born in White Plains, NY, to the late August Simons and Theresa Spizzirro Simons on December 16, 1953. Doreen grew up in Harrison, NY, and graduated from Harrison High School in 1971. Later she attended Iona University (New Rochelle, NY). She graduated from George Mason University (Fairfax, Virginia) in 1990 with a BA in Psychology. She was a member of Psi Chi, Alpha Chi, and Golden Key honor societies.
Doreen loved horses: riding them, caring for them, and being around them from an early age until she died. She loved all animals and had many dogs and cats throughout her life. Doreen worked at the Federal Highway Administration, the Patent and Trademark Office, and Fort Belvoir (Virginia) at various times in her life.
Doreen was loved deeply by her large family: Sisters Diane Patrone (Ric), Beverly Kohlberger (Richard), Marietta LaFrancois, (Richard, deceased), brother Darryl Simons (Debra), and sister RoseMarie Lazear (Wes); nephews and nieces Marc Simons, Richard Kohlberger (Jenning), Jared Kohlberger (Alexandra), Jeff Kohlberger (Danielle), Bethany Smith (Marlow), Justin LaFrancois, Lisa Simons, AJ Lazear (deceased); great-nieces and great-nephews Noelle, Charles, Nathaniel, Jack, Mia, Hunter, Julianne, Angelina, Andrew, Everly, James, Cameron, and Benjamin.
Equally, Bill’s family loved her deeply: Sisters and brothers Rosemary Zaccagnino, Jim (deceased) (Nancy), Irene Vaudin (Mark), Ellen Zaccagnino, and Daniel Zaccagnino (Eileen). Nieces and nephews Michael Zaccagnino, Jesse Zaccagnino, Anna Vaudin (Tadeo), Thomas Vaudin, Cody Zaccagnino (Lauren), Kelsey Zaccagnino (Kyle), and Madison Zaccagnino.
Doreen was filled with a joyful and generous spirit. Her family, friends, and all she met will miss her but will carry her spirit in their hearts.
Doreen’s Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 17 at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Highway, Alexandria Virginia 22309. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (4301 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia 22203) or Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
