Clarence N. Swanner Jr. passed away peacefully in Alexandria, VA December 23, 2022. He was 86, born in Norfolk County Virginia and graduated from Great Bridge High School. He attended Old Dominion University.
He served in the US Army for four years, stationed for part of that time in Berlin, Germany where he met his beloved wife Christel. For over two decades he managed Swanner’s Market in Chesapeake, and then was the meatcutter at South Mills Supermarket in North Carolina for another 23 years. His strong work ethic, good humor and kindness touched everyone he met. He played football and baseball in high school and in the service. His hobbies included waterskiing as well as golf. Above all, Clarence loved his family very much and spoiled his dogs Muffin and Lily.
He is survived by his wife Christel, son Craig (Anh Phan), younger sister Faye Gobel (Gary), granddaughters Kelly Swanner Duran (Ariel) and Megan Swanner Carlan (Chris). He is preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Dot Swanner, his sister Jeannette, and his son Scott.
Plans for a memorial service in 2023 are forthcoming.
