On Sunday, May 3, 2015, retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant ARTHUR E. STURGILL of Alexandria, VA, died peacefully at his home after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.
Art served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1985 with tours of duty in Texas, Kansas, Japan, Illinois, Vietnam, Florida, The Netherlands, Minnesota, Thailand, and the Pentagon. His final active duty assignment was with the Secretary of the Air Force, Legislative Liaison. His military decorations included the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star.
Arthur Earl Sturgill, Sr., was born in Longacre, Fayette County, West Virginia. He joined the West Virginia National Guard when he was 15 years old and enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 17. Although Art was born and raised as a “poor, Hillbilly Boy,” during his military career he traveled to every continent and about two-thirds of the countries in the world.
After his retirement, Art played golf for two years and then accepted a managerial position with Automation Research Systems, Limited, for 12 years.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Ruthy Goblirsch Sturgill of Alexandria; son, Scott (Doris) Sturgill of Yorktown, VA; daughter, Bobbie (Mike) Latham and grandson, Brandon Latham, of Belgrade, Serbia; and brother, Robert Sturgill of West Virginia. Art was preceded in death by his parents; Earl and Edith Pauley Sturgill; sister, Mary Branard; brother, Michael Sturgill; and son, Arthur E. Sturgill, Jr.
Friends may call on Friday, May 8, 2015, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, VA. His funeral service and interment will take place at a later date.
