He attended Western Pentecostal Bible College (now Summit Pacific College), graduating with a 5 year Diploma in Theology in 1971. That same year he married Laurel, his wife of 51 years. He went on to earn his Master of Christian Studies in Theology in 1975 from Regent College, Vancouver. He was also recognized with two honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees for the seven theological books he authored.
He spent his entire career - from 1977 to 2011 - as teacher, administrator and writer at Summit Pacific College in Abbotsford, then was Scholar in Residence until 2016.
Through both his teaching and academic writing he deeply impacted students in the classroom and other parts of the world.
Roger was recognized in 2021 with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to Pentecostal scholarship.
He loved dogs, puns, and was an avid collector of books, model cars, and antique cameras.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Laurel, sister Irene Jonas (Rob), brother Clifford (Dawn), nieces Pamela Robinson, Amy VandenHoek, and Jody Stronstad, great nephew and niece, Daniel and Grace Gully, and his uncle Peter Bendiksen (Marg). He is predeceased by his niece Jennifer Gully.
