Robert John Geyer, born in Albion, October 13, 1921 to John and Minnie (Schumacher) Geyer passed peacefully on 20 December, 2016, age 95. He was preceded in death by his loving and caring wife, Patricia Ann (Wight) Geyer. He is survived by 3 children, Linda J. Geyer, Rev. Pamela S. Kail and John W. (Cindy) Geyer, 4 grandchildren, Frederick J. Geyer, Betsy (Steve) Sedore, Amanda J. (Pippa Holloway) Kail, Andrew (Cassandra) Kail and two great grandsons Griffin and Cooper Sedore.
Robert graduated from Albion High School, attended MSU, (was MAC and then MSC) graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering. Like so many of his generation, he was enrolled in Army ROTC, completing his degree and immediately being marched off to eventually complete artillery officer training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He served during WWII in France with the U.S. Army’s 293rd Field Artillery Observation Battalion, returning home after the end of the war in Europe, and began training to invade Japan when the Japanese surrendered.
While at MSU, Robert became the first president of the newly formed Sigma Chi Fraternity, and met the love of his life, his sweetheart, Patricia. They were married in 1944.
After the war Robert and his father, long time building contractor, John Geyer, purchased and operated the Albion Lumber Co. This was converted to apartments and offices in the mid and late 1960s.
Robert was a life-long member of Salem United Church of Christ. He served on the City Board of Review, Albion Board of Education and was a long time member of the Albion Rotary Club and a life member of Patrick Leo Hanlon Post 55 of the American Legion. He founded the Albion Area Landlords Association, retiring from the rental business in 1995.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and built cottages on Rice Creek and in Luce County on a lake. Music was important especially with social gatherings and he frequently played the button box accordion with friends and family accompanying with song and impromptu instruments.
Cremation has taken place. A wake for friends and family will be held at the American Legion on Friday, 24 February 2017, from 7-9pm. The funeral service will be on Saturday 25 February 2PM at Salem UCC (113 W. Pine St., Albion) officiated by Rev. Lori Grinnell. The family will receive visitors at the church 1 hour prior to the service. Graveside committal and Military honors will take place immediately following the service with a light meal and refreshments at the American Legion Hall after. The family is being served by J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion.
