Margaret Elizabeth “Maggie” Corey age 96 passed away on Monday, October 23. She has been a resident of the Marshall Nursing and Rehab Center of Marshall, Michigan for several years. She was the oldest daughter of Clinton and Isabelle Emhiser of Painted Post, New York. She graduated from High School in Painted Post and then went to work in an ice cream shop. She married Joseph M. Corey on July 26, 1947 and they moved to Corning, New York to live. Joseph had two children (Marsha Hegstad and Joseph R. Corey) from his first marriage and were blessed with three additional children: JoAnn Frederick, Tom Corey and Sylvia Miller.
During the 1950's the entire family, Margaret and four children flew to "Willow Run Airport” to begin their life in Albion. Joseph had already driven to Albion weeks earlier as part of the Corning Glass Factory group re-location. Joseph and Margaret’s youngest child, Sylvia was born in Michigan. They lived on Lincoln Street in Albion for over 30 years. They were members of the First Baptist Church where Margaret participated in many activities including playing piano, organ and working on missions. She also participated in Scouts, PTA Women's Club, and Sewing Club. She was a faithful reader of the Bible and memorized many Bible verses. She helped at church by packing barrels of clothes for missions, teaching classes for children, cooking for weddings and church groups, and nursery help. She also played the piano and organ for Sunday School. For several years she served as the organist at East Eckford Church. She worked at Carter's Bakery in Charlotte after retiring from the Albion Evening Recorder.
She was an amazing cook who could whip up gourmet meals on a moment’s notice. Her biscuits, potato salad, and deviled eggs were legendary. Her most celebrated recipes; beet salad, pea salad, sloppy joes, chop suey, peanut butter sauce, oyster stew, and, her most famous dish “porcupines” live on today in the family recipe book. Family holidays were fun and full of many traditions including special dishes and activities. She was a very artistic person whose ability was on display with the many tole painted pieces that she made for her family, friends and for craft shows – she always said that "she painted with love."
When Joseph retired, he and Margaret moved to a cottage at Duck Lake. They made many lake friends, enjoyed all the lake activities and Maggie walked with their neighbors. They also played games such as Scrabble and UNO. She enjoyed pontoon boats rides in the summer, ice skating in the winter and many other activities at Duck Lake. In later years at the nursing home she enjoyed playing bingo and adult coloring activities. She made many cards to use for writing notes to friends and family.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Joseph of 60 years, her parents, Clinton and Isabelle Emhiser, her brother Don and sister Ann, and many relatives. She has 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren whom she was immensely proud of -- she has made a tremendous impact on all who have known her and she will be missed.
