and Georgiann (Scott) McClure in Lansing, Michigan.
John, along with his family, moved to Albion in 1961 where John attended Albion Public Schools until his graduation in 1973. John
was proud to be a Wildcat and has many lasting friendships from his early school days starting at Dalrymple. John was an accomplished athlete and avid sports fan. He loved watching all Detroit teams. He distinctly loved cheering for the Tigers. Among other
sports and outdoor activities, he enjoyed fishing, golf, baseball, and swimming. As a common theme throughout his life, John especially loved the friendships he made participating in sports or on teams. He played Little League hockey and semi pro baseball.
One interesting game involved a trip to the Jackson prison where his team decided it was best to lose the game on purpose. While attending high school, John earned multiple letters in swimming and baseball. He also earned a freshman letter in football but
mom said he was too small to play after that season. However, John was never too small to accomplish anything and rarely would step away from a challenge. When it came to athletics, John was most at-home in the water. He earned four varsity letters in swimming
and twice appeared in the state high school swimming championships. He posted the fifth fastest time in the hundred yard breaststroke in 1972. Because of his swimming ability, John earned a scholarship to Western Kentucky University, where he went on to earn
an additional four varsity letters and a degree in Physical Education. While at WKU John made many friends and became affiliated with the “Dutch Boys,” a group of college swimmers mostly from Holland, Michigan. He also earned the nickname “Gumby” and was
affectionately called that by his friends. John proudly remained a “Dutch Boy” throughout the remainder of his life. Gumby will always be remembered by his friends as someone fun to be around.
After college, John returned to Albion where he was active in the community. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, on the planning
committee for Festival of Forks annual celebration, and was a deacon of the first Presbyterian church of Albion. He worked at Harvard Industries as a quality control engineer until it closed, Borg Warner in Marshall, and Trine Industries in Angola, Indiana.
John’s greatest accomplishment or love in life, however, was not found on the playing field. His greatest love and passion (Yes,
even more than a great big bowl of ice cream) was for his children, and that love was evident by anyone who saw John with them. Maycee, age 15, and Landon, age 14, were John’s treasures and he centered his life around them. He enjoyed going to any of their
events or activities. He loved taking his kids to the zoo or on vacation. Time spent with Maycee and Landon was John’s life. He could not have been more proud of them.
John is survived by his children, Maycee Lou and Landon Scott McClure, both of Marshall; brothers, Thomas Jay (Brenda) McClure
of Albion, James Richard (Adele) McClure of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Scott David (Louise) McClure of Allegan; Stepmother/father, Lois and Leon White of Chelsea, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members. He is also survived by many, many friends whom
he also considered family. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his nephew, Andrew Hastings McClure.
