Mother Watson was born to Kyser Lewis and Lola Mae (Bell) Lewis on August 26, 1928, in Greenville, Alabama. She was the 9th child of 16 born to this union. In her youth, she matriculated through the Greenville Public School system. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and united with Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. As a faithful member she attended Sunday School and was active in several youth activities and auxiliaries.
She married J.C. Watson on June 16, 1946, and relocated to Chicago, IL. One daughter, Gloria Watson, was born of this union. Mother Watson recently became a part of Five Generations.
While residing in Chicago, Mother Watson united with the Greater Harvest Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Louis Bode. As a faithful and dedicated member, she taught Sunday School; was president of the prayer band, and she was a spiritual counselor.
She accepted a position at Hart Marx Clothing as a clothing inspector. During her employment she became a meticulous and precise clothing inspector. She retired from Hart Marx after 40 years of employment. Upon retirement, she relocated to Albion, MI and united with Grace Temple Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Elder Robert L. Brown, Sr. and now under the leadership of Pastor Stephen C. Williams, and First Lady Diane Williams. Mother Watson loved Pastor and First Lady Williams dearly. She remained a faithful Sunday School Teacher, Prayer Band President, and the President of the Mother’s Board. Mother Watson started a prayer group. They would pray faithfully together every Wednesday morning.
She enjoyed attending church, shopping, and working in her yard. Mother Watson didn’t mind telling you that the Lord was her life. She was living to live again. As a servant she would often speak about God’s Love. So, in the words of Mother Watson, “Let Love Do It.”
Mother Watson leaves to cherish her memory, her loving and devoted daughter, Gloria (Robert) Smith; 8 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; 2 Sisters: Elizabeth M, Carter, and Vera B. Simpson; 1 Brother: Calvin C. Lewis; a host of nieces and nephews; 3 special daughters: Debra Brown, Annette Williams and Yolanda Foster; Grace Temple Church of God in Christ Family; Greater Harvest Baptist Church Family; Albion Community supporters, friends and neighbors.
Mother Watson was preceded in death by her parents; 10 sisters, 3 brothers, 2 grandsons: Marlon Byrd, Sr. and Bobby Smith and 1 great-grandson: Jason Whetstone. Mother Watson will be greatly missed.
