Dorothy Winifred Van Meter, age 95 of Marshall, formerly of Albion, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Maplewood of Marshall under the loving care of her family and Oaklawn Hospice. She was born July 13, 1920 in Albion, MI the daughter of Ward and Ruth (Romans) Sharp. She married Carlton J. “Colly” Van Meter, Sr. on August 2, 1941 in Lansing, Michigan and he preceded her in death after 72 years of marriage on January 24, 2013.
Dorothy worked at Service Caster in Albion during World War II while Colly was serving in the Army Air Corps in Europe. After the war, she raised her family while working as a bookkeeper for the family business, Sharp’s Evergreen Nursery. She was also very active in local charities, such as meals on wheels, the American Legion Auxiliary, and worked as a volunteer at Albion Community Hospital. She enjoyed vacationing at their cottage in Grayling as well as their wintertime home in Naples Florida.
Dorothy is survived by children: Terrie Marks and C.J. Van Meter, Jr., grandchildren: Andrew (Annie) Marks, Aaron (Bonny) Marks, Carly and Christopher Van Meter, great-grandchildren: Evan, Emma, Joshua Marks.
According to Dorothy’s wishes, cremation has taken place and her ashes will be laid to rest along with her late husband’s at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road, Holly, Michigan 48442 at a later date.
