Age 63 died suddenly, June 11, 2013 in Clarence Township. He was a Supervisor of Public Utilities in Albion and had worked for the City for 47 years, starting there after he graduated from Springport High School in 1967. Dick had also worked for Clarence Township at the Duck Lake Lagoon System for 33 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert A. and Mae (Waito) Siefert. Surviving are his wife, Patricia “Pat” and two sons, David and Jeremy; 3 brothers, Ken (Nita) and Larry (Sheila) of Springport and Don of Albion, he is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Dick volunteered for the Army draft in July of 1968, went through basic training at Ft. Knox, KY and was then stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. before going overseas in April 1969. He received the Bronze Star Medal for heroism near Cu Chi, Vietnam and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
Sgt. Siefert was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement. He actively participated in more than 25 aerial missions over hostile territory. The Army Commendation Medal was also awarded to him for heroism while serving as a sniper with Company A. Dick was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent many hours outdoors.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, June 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the Springport V.F.W., 230 Mechanic St., Springport, MI 49284.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the Springport High School FFA or to the Springport VFW in memory of Duane “Dick” Siefert.
