So sorry to hear of Dr Hogberg's passing. He was one of my favorite professors and it was so wonderful to reconnect with him on Facebook. May his memory be a blessing to all who loved him.

David was a close friend for nearly 50 years. It was David who welcomed me into his home in Albion when I came to interview in 1977. He became my advisor and advocate in the department, my mentor and my confidant. His urbane wit and uproarious laughter brightened every meeting and enlightened us daily. He comforted those who needed comforting and pressed joy and pleasure on those who might be in need of a brighter outlook on life. He was utterly selfless and generous to a fault, always encouraging, always warm, always helpful. I never knew him to do a mean or disrespectful thing to anyone. He loved his students, always trying to get them to do their best.
The world will be poorer in his absence, but his legacy will continue to be a shining star for those of us he leaves behind.

Dave Hogberg was one of my favorite professors at Albion College and what a gift it was, that he kept in touch with me all the years after I graduated in 1975.  Yes, 1975.  It was because of Dave and Phil Hostetler as well, that I had such a passion for the field of psychology and human behavior.

Here in the  UP, pretty much in seclusion this summer, to finally write a book I have gathered information for and been muddling over doing for many years,  I sent Dave an excited message just weeks ago about a discovery I had made.  I brought with me, a folder of reports, essays, etc. that were required from his and other classes at Albion College.  One of them asked us to look far into that future that seemed to stretch out forever at that time in our lives and see ourselves as "old" looking back on what we would have accomplished.  I had concluded the assignment with the words that I would have written a book about my family and the family farm on which I was raised.  That  is the very book I am writing now at the age of 70.  Dave likely never saw my message and I did not know he had passed, until today, Aug. 7.    Dave, thank you for being a great prof and equally great friend.

I have known Dave since 2002 when we met at the AP reading for psychology. He was good friends with a colleague of mine Sam Cameron, also from Arcadia University. We became friends and exchanged e-mail addresses at the end of the reading. From that time on when we weren't at the Reading, we were almost daily e-mail friends. We would get together with Sam at subsequent readings in Daytona Beach Florida. Eventually, we both retired from the Reading, but kept up our e-mail contact. I don't remember exactly when we started comparing puzzle scores through text messages. We both did the New York Times puzzles, Wordle, the mini crossword, Connections and the Spelling Bee. We competed on our times on the mini and on our scores on the other puzzles. This has been going on for many years. However, it was not the only thing that our friendship was based on. We shared values in life and politics. We talked about our families and day-to-day happenings in our lives. He messaged me on June 28th that he was having Hospice in his home. So, I knew that it was close to the end. But he was still doing puzzles on June 29th and apologizing for his poor scores. His last message to me was Monday July 1st, " Don't know how much longer I have. Many thanks for the memories." Here is what I wrote back, " I am very sorry to hear that. I will miss our daily online friendship a lot. And I treasure the times we were able to be together in person. I consider you one of my best friends and have thoroughly enjoyed our puzzle competition." He responded with, "Thanks." I shared our online friendship with my family including my husband, daughters, sons-in-law and six grandchildren, so much so that they feel they know him well too. They expressed their sympathy to me on his death. He was a great friend to many and beloved by them. You are missed, my friend.

Dave was the essence of Albion—an absolutely wonderful professor who cared deeply about his students and did a terrific job of introducing us to the wonders of psychology.  He made his students a real part of his life. I remember Daniel and Sarah as delightful children and offer my deepest sympathy on such a tremendous loss. Judy, his first wife,always treated us with warmth and kindness. And we loved their dog,Charlie,whom Dave (and only Dave) believed was well-trained. Dave loved parties and sharing  stories and a pitcher at Cascarelli’s. In1973 he had a big end*of-year party and snapped a picture of me partied out and sound asleep in his backyard and using an old tire as a pillow. It was an unforgettable wedding gift! I am sure that if there isa  heaven,  Dave is there,telling stories andpartying on with Albionians.

I was so sorry to hear of David’s passing.  My deepest sympathy for the loss of your husband and father, truly an unforgettable, gifted and genuine man.  How much I will miss our occasional Bakery lunches with great conversation and many laughs.  Just being with David always seemed to make the world a better place, and Albion was indeed a better place because of David.

As fellow Yoopers, we had several reasons to forge a friendship. Dave would share U.P. news articles and special interest links. In our Albion Zoom group, he was our "Encyclopedia Hogberg" because of the breadth and depth of his knowledge, his amazing capacity for research, and his unquenchable thirst for and exercise of wisdom. His intellectual acumen was complemented with remarkable humility, a rare combination in today's "I know better/more than you" contentious society. Dave was a gentleman, a truly gentle man who was gentlemanly, kind, thoughtful, and caring. Beloved for all these reasons, he was revered for his courage. Facing his health challenges with such dedication, resolve, positivism, and good naturedness is an unparalleled  legacy. Dave leaves fond memories and a role model that was admired and loved.

I will miss David’s wit and personality on our bi-weekly coffee group calls where we spoke about all things Albion, Albion College ( and everything else). He was my Professor of Psychology at Albion College my freshman year … as he was for so many others.  Will miss him greatly.

Please accept my sincere condolences . Dr. Hogberg guided me through my years at Albion College and it because of him that I became a psych major and went on to grad school and a career as a university professor. 
I am very saddened by this news and I am sure that everyone who knew him feels the same.

I'll really miss David's sense of humor and the twinkle in his eye when he told a funny story - as well as discussing recent research with him. Even though he retired well before I joined the Psychology Department, he was always one of my favorite colleagues. My heart-felt condolences to Pat, Sarah, and everyone else in the family.

Such a lovely man.  I got to know him well at the wild experience of Advanced Placement Reading and I was always impressed with his enthusiasm, pleasantness, and easy laugh.  He will be greatly missed. Jane Halonen

You have brought wit and wisdom to my life and being your friend has made me a better person too. May you and John be hunting mushrooms on the other side.
