Sally Barnwell Cherry, 98, passed away peacefully in the company of her family on April 18, 2025. She was born on December 29, 1926, in Akron, OH. She grew up in Ann Arbor, MI where she graduated from University High School and the University of Michigan.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Elliott and Lucy Barnwell; sister, Lucy B. Easlick; son, William E. (Melissa) Wetterau, Sr.; grandson, William E. Wetterau, Jr; and great-grandson, Brandon Pool.
Formerly married to George E. Wetterau, she is survived by their loving children, Sally B. Lockhart and John B. (Reid) Wetterau. Sally is also survived by seven grandchildren, Christina (Ronald) Higdon; William Lockhart, Jr.; Sarah (Scott) Kobulnicky; Matthew (Julia) Wetterau; Candice (Jeremy) Caprett; Megan Wetterau; and Frank (Chelsea) Wojtowicz, Jr.; 12 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews to whom she was devoted.
Before moving to Akron in 1951, Sally worked for the government in Washington, D.C. at the Department of Health, Education & Welfare as an education specialist. For many years, she was employed by the Summit County board of Developmental Disabilities.
Sally was a strong advocate for her community, serving on several boards and committees; among them: Junior League of Akron, Crippled Children’s Society, Blossom Music Center Advisory Committee, OASIS, Women’s Board of Sumner on Ridgewood, and most recently the Citizens Review Board of Summit County Juvenile Courts.
Sally was an avid fan of U of M athletics, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Cleveland Indians, whose games she attended well into her eighties.
At Sally’s request, there will be no calling hours or memorial service. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ronald McDonald House or a charity of your choice.
