Paul, the youngest of the Mitchem triplets born on February 9, 1954 to Albert and Inez (Haywood) Mitchem. He was a graduate of East High School Class of 1972. He was employed at Eastman Chemical for 47 years. Preceded in death by his father Albert; brothers James (City View) and Timothy (Tim) Mitchem.
He is survived by sons Justin (Suzanna) Johnson and Kristian (Christy) Johnson; mother Inez Mitchem; sisters Carolyn Blackmon, Marilyn, and Burnedette Mitchem; brothers Peter (Billie Jean) and Phillip Mitchem; grandchildren Taunya Michelle Thorp of Manassas, VA; Quest Johnson, and John Johnson of Akron. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
During his youth he enjoyed decorating his bikes and cars. He would take apart the engine and front end of his Toronado and would put the car back together without any spare parts! Paul was a Hugh sports fan and participant. Growing up he and his triplet brothers enjoyed swimming, playing basketball, and fishing. They would ride their bikes from their home on South Street to Portage Lakes to fish. In high school he played varsity basketball and ran track. After high school Paul played on basketball teams at the Firestone Park YMCA and softball for Kenny’s Automotive and Monsanto. He developed a love for bowling at the Old Garden Lanes. He started out struggling to average a 100 pins per game and grew to participate in multiple leagues throughout Akron and traveling bowling Leagues. His love for fishing never ceased. He purchased a fishing boat and would often travel to various docks along Lake Erie to fish for Walleye, Perch, etc. Paul and his brothers would stock up on fish through the summer for all to enjoy at and end of season fish fry. He also enjoyed watching college basketball and football. Paul scheduled his vacation around March Madness each year. His favorite college teams were the Michigan Wolverines and North Carolina Tar Heels. He did not watch a lot of professional basketball, but his favorite professional football team was the Pittsburg Steelers. He was also a Jazz enthusiast!
The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 5, 2020 from 6:00pm until 8;00pm at Rose Hill Funeral Home located at 3653 W. Market Street, Akron, Ohio 44333. COVID-19 protocols will be observed with social distancing and facial coverings required. A private family funeral and burial has been scheduled. The celebration of life ceremony will by officiated and eulogized by Evangelist Carolyn Blackmon.
