Martha was born in Massillon, Ohio on July 20, 1934 to parents Theodore and Ola (Carter) Jones. Martha graduated from Massillon Washington High School and was always proud of the fact that she was the first Black cheerleader in the school’s history. She had worked as a nurse for Akron City Hospital where she retired after 30 years of service. Martha loved all kinds of arts and crafts, especially plaster craft, knitting, crocheting, and painting. She was an avid reader who also loved to watch old movies. Most of all she was a wonderful wife and mother to her family. Martha will be fondly remembered for her favorite saying – “When the spirit hit her, she could cook!”
Martha is survived by her husband of 54 years, Claude Shuler Jr., her only son Ron (Kay Bell) Shuler, Surviving also are her grandchildren: Amber Markay, Vontrise LeGrair, Victor LeGrair, Alexis Shuler and her great-grandson Logan Markay. Also left to cherish her memory are her nieces Marsha Malone and Saundra Mitchal and great nieces Shannon Holland, Courtney and Taylor Cochran along with a host of family and friends. Also, (son) Anthony Shuler, (daughter) Claudia Shuler.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Theodore Jones and her sister Betty Brown and niece Linda Cochran.
Martha’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Summa Hospice and her special friends, April Moore and Jim Reed for their support and compassionate care given to Martha.
Friends will be received on Monday, March 25, 2019 at the Rose Hill Funeral Home, 3653 W. Market St., Fairlawn, Ohio 44333 from 11:00am until the funeral service, officiated by Rev. Dr. Sheree Winn, beginning at 12:00pm. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.
