Joy Althea Wacker Lewis went home to her Lord, and to many she loved who went before her, on October 27, 2023, in Akron, Ohio, after fighting the debilitating disease of Alzheimer’s for twelve years. Joy was born on May 27, 1926 to Lou (Ihrig) and Herbert Wacker in Detroit, Michigan.
Joy lived up to her name in a zest for life, quick wit, ready humor and quick empathy for all she met. She was the Director of Admitting for Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Warren, Ohio for more than 25 years.
Joy’s many creative talents included designing and sewing clothing and quilts, drawing, painting, and creating ceramic pieces.
Joy graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1947 and married fellow student Roger Turrell in 1948. They had a daughter, Wendy.
In 1993 Joy married the love of her life, Walter Paul Lewis, who predeceased her in 2006.
She will be sorely missed by her daughter, grandsons Jeffrey (Debra) and Jason (Michele) Bogniard; great-grandchildren Alex, Ava, and Ella Bogniard; step-daughter Paula Lewis Shivers; and beloved brother Don (Mary) Wacker.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a Celebration of Joy Lewis’ life at Rose Hill Funeral Home, 3653 West Market Street, Akron, on Sunday, November 12 at 4 p.m. Visitation will take place one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s Disease Research, or the Alzheimer’s Foundation to help support research efforts.
