Jerry Shaw, 92, beloved father and husband, lifelong Akron resident, and Chairman Emeritus of Sterling Jewelers, Inc., passed away in Boca Raton, Florida on Saturday, April 21, 2012. A graduate of West High School, he also attended the Juilliard School where he pursued his passion for music. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was an avid golfer, pianist and philanthropist, donating to many worthwhile causes throughout his life, most notably to the Shaw JCC in Akron and the Akron Art Museum.
He had a great passion for his work. Upon returning from the service in World War II, he assumed the reins of Sterling Jewelers, which had been founded by his father, Henry Shaw. He served as Chairman and CEO from 1953 through 1987, steering the company through remarkable growth, emerging as a leading jewelry corporation in North America.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Patsy; his daughter, Debbie Shaw of Washington, DC; his son, Mark Shaw of Akron, Ohio, and Debbie Deal of Akron, Ohio; and numerous extended family and friends around the country.
He touched the lives of many with his love, wisdom, generosity and kindness, and will be sorely missed.
A funeral service will be held at the Shaw JCC at 750 White Pond Dr., Akron 44320, Wednesday at 11 a.m. Donations may be made to the Shaw Jewish Community Center. Arrangements are being made by Gordon-Flury Memorial Home, 330-836-7989
