Emery Anthony (Americo Antonius) Martin (Martini), 92 years of age, having lived in Kenmore, Steubenville, Canton, Akron and 50 years in Manchester Ohio, most recently of Northfield Center, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 20th, 2023.
Born in Akron Ohio, to Italian Immigrants Eugenia and Sylvester Martini, Emery (Em) was the only child born in America. His three siblings and mother traveled from Rivisondoli Italy, by boat, to join Sylvester who had come to America to pursue the American dream. Sylvester had found his way to Akron to secure employment at Firestone Tire and Rubber. It was rumored that Emery spent hours teaching his parents English at the Dinner Table.
Emery attended Garfield High School and then Kent State University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, rumored to have studied 4 languages, and enlisted in the Air Force at age 20, or 21 depending on which document you take as gospel for his birthdate. Emery served overseas and was a veteran of foreign wars. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1955. During his years in the service, he played Clarinet in a band, and became quite skilled at the Jitterbug, claiming to be the best Jitterbugger in Akron in the mid-50s. His love of music and his musical and dance talents have been carried on in his kids and his grandchildren.
Emery started working for Firestone Tire and Rubber as a service tech in a Tire Service center. Long hours and hard work resulted in him moving up and eventually getting his own store to manage. Unfortunately, Emery contracted Tuberculosis. He beat the odds and Firestone offered him a position in the growing field of computer programming. Emery left for 8 weeks of intensive study, returned as a programmer in the Computer Center in Akron, and progressed to systems analyst. He mastered the language of Cobol and helped run the entire Firestone Payroll system at the Computer Center. He retired at age 55 and spent his days pursuing his passion of gardening, raising children, growing tomatoes, making wine, and relaxing. Occasionally he was used as cheap labor by his children and wife on various home repair projects, rental home renovations and car repairs.
In 1955 Emery met his wife Patricia Bauer, and over the almost 67 years of wedded bliss, they raised three children and several dogs and had at least 12 cars, mostly bought at repo auctions. Emery put family first, always, even to the point of the infamous family camping trips. He was a dedicated father, a loving grandfather and husband.
Emery was a role model in his Catholic faith, represented the US Air Force at the Shrine of Saint Bernadette at Lourdes and attended mass regularly. He availed himself of all sacraments and supported his children and grandchildren in their faith journeys.
Emery is survived by his wife Patricia, and leaves behind 3 children: Jeffrey (Jane), Lisa (Mark) Havir, Christopher (Karyn), 7 Grandchildren: Patrick, Charlie, Michael, Jack (Bailey), Hank, Bridgett, and Julia.
Catholic Mass of Christian Burial is August 10th at 11:00AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hudson Ohio, followed immediately by a luncheon for all.
Internment at Ohio Western Reserve Veterans Cemetery to follow later for the immediate family.
The family requests donations in Lieu of floral tributes be sent to Wounded Warriors. https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/default.aspx?tsid=10043&ovr_acv_id=4320
