Edna Mae Miller was born the eighth of nine children to Clarence E. Miller, Sr. and Eunice Wyatt Miller on August 12, 1935, in Akron, Ohio. On January 5, 2024, at the age of 88, Edna peacefully transitioned from labor to reward.
Edna graduated from West High School in Akron and went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in education from the HBCU Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. She lauded higher education and had a passion for service as evidenced by her tenure as an educator for over 30 years with Weaver School and Workshop, which later became Summit DD.
Edna loved the Lord with every fiber of her being. She spent her formative years as a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and later became a dedicated and active member of Grace Cathedral.
Although she had no biological children of her own, Edna birthed and nurtured ideals, hopes, and inspiration to her many nieces and nephews. She specifically imprinted into their DNA her passion for reading, thirst for learning, and quest for truth. Edna led her many “children” by example, demonstrated through her living out of scripture, encouragement of others, acts of service, and support of various ministries and charities both domestic and abroad. Her other favorite pastimes included shopping and telephone calls with family “just to check in.” While Edna was a quiet woman, she had a quick wit and did not hesitate to call out “a pack of mess.”
Edna is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Willie J. (Willie D.) Miller and Clarence Miller, Jr.; and sisters, Nellie G. (Marion) Bronner, Margie Stewart, Vivian Quarles, Eunice (Cle) Jackson, and Juanita Miller. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister Loretta Smith of Moorestown, New Jersey; sister-in-law Ethel Miller of Akron; niece and caregiver Stephanie A. Bell, whom she affectionately called Ann; and a host of other nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
