Walter Payton Lee, 81, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2015. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Elmwood West United Methodist Church, 1302 S. Pioneer, with Rev. David Walker and Rev. Dare Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Walter was born on July 8, 1934, in Picayune, Mississippi to the late Chester C. and Ora Parker Lee. He attended school in Leetown, Mississippi and furthered his education by graduating from Eastfield Junior College in Mesquite, TX where he earned an Associate’s Degree. Walter married Dorothy Morris on June 9, 1953, in Amarillo, TX. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from November 1952 until July 1974. Walter and his family lived at many locations in the US and overseas. They moved to Abilene shortly before he retired as a Senior Master Sergeant from the USAF. Walter was then self-employed until he retired in 1999. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and traveling in his RV. Walter was a long time member of Elmwood West United Methodist Church. His survivors include Dorothy Lee, his wife of 62 years; two daughters; Cindy Walker and husband, David, of Houston and Vickie Finley and husband, Curtis, of Kerrville; four grandchildren, Sarah Robins and husband, Ty, and Leah Walker all of Houston, and Taylor Finley and Megan Finley both of Kerrville; a brother, Paul Lee and wife, Gretchen; half-brother, Sammy Lee and wife, Beatrice; and half-sister, Claudette Hensley all of Picayune, Mississippi. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Helen Hester and Alice Reeb.
