A graveside service commemorating her life will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Mid Way Cemetery in Jones County, Texas (Hodges).
Verdene was born on February 15, 1933 in Abilene, Texas to the late Andrew Verdie Freeman and Edna Ruth (Bird) Freeman. She grew up in Abilene and never lost her hometown pride. She was a member of Abilene High School’s class of 1951. She married the late Eugene N. Nichols and together they began their family that would eventually consist of two daughters and one son. The family moved around the country following Mr. Nichol’s military career. In the early 70’s Verdene and the family returned to Abilene. She began a Real Estate career with Tommy Milliron. The family later moved to Cisco where she began a very rewarding career at Dean Drug as a clerk. Verdene was very creative and artistic. After the passing of her husband she relocated to the DFW area to be closer to her family. The loved being surrounded by her family and making precious memories together.
She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Eugene Nichols; sister Barbara Gray and her husband Murphy; nephews, Douglas Gray and Carroll Murphy.
She is survived by her devoted children, Donna Dehne, Mark Nichols and his wife, Sharon and Sandra Lemke and her husband John; her grandson, Derek Nichols and his wife, Priscilla; two great-grandchildren, Shawn and Madison Nichols; Sharolyn Murphy, Mary Severance and her husband Bruce; nieces, Glo Wilson and Justin Starling; nephews, Bill Gray and Curtis Murphy.
