Vera Williams Johnson Geer of Abilene passed away on Monday, June 22, 2015, at the age of 94. Services will be at 10 am on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Elliott-Hamil Chapel of Memories with burial following in Elmwood Memorial Park. Blake Williams and David Allen Sprott will be officiating. The family will receive friends at a visitation Friday evening from 5 to 7 pm at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory Street.
She was born August 26, 1920 at Hoovers Valley, TX, to Hiram & Nona (Ligon) Williams. She attended college at Southwest Texas State Teachers College at San Marcos and then taught in a 1-room school in the late 1930’s. Later, she worked as an advertising copywriter at Joske’s in San Antonio. She met Percy B. Johnson & Samuel L. Geer, both of whom were in the military, at church in San Antonio during World War II. She and Percy were married in July 1946 & they settled in Abilene. She worked at various jobs in Abilene, including buyer & advertising copywriter for Thornton’s Department Store, owner/operator of Johnson’s Variety Store, researcher for University of Michigan as well as Research Triangle Institute, & real estate broker. She furthered her art education at McMurry College & worked as a commercial artist for West Texas Monument Co. In Abilene, She was a long time member of University Church of Christ.
Vera and Percy had 47 wonderful years together until he passed away in January 1993. Vera and Sam Greer, who had been widowed in 1995, renewed their acquaintance in 1998 (aided by one of his daughters) & were married in February 1999. They enjoyed 12 years together until he passed away in March 2011.
Vera is survived by her sister Edna (& husband Ed) Brown of Arlington, TX; her brother-in-law R.C. Schwartz of Burnet, TX; children Larry (& wife Ann) Johnson, of Bartlesville, OK; Janice (& husband Rocky) Sprott, of Stratford, TX; & Kenneth Johnson of Lubbock, TX and stepdaughters Gwen (& husband Billy) Parris, of Lyn Haven, FL; & Elizabeth (& husband Greg) Moore, of Chapala, Mexico. She is also survived by many nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, Percy Johnson & Sam Geer; two brothers, Albert (& wife Virgil) Williams & Loyd (& wife Marie) Williams; & three sisters, Ophelia (& husband Lowell) Lynn, Alice (as an infant), & Lois Schwartz.
