Tommy was born October 19, 1930 to John and Lula McKissack in Seguin, Texas. He graduated from Odessa High School, Odessa, Texas. He also attended the University of Houston.
In 1950, Tommy married his high school sweetheart, Marty. His Naval service took him to various parts of the world. Marty accompanied him to his assignments on the East and West Coasts of the U.S.
Tommy and Marty moved to Abilene in 1967 and built their business, McKissack Appliance & TV, located at South 14th and Barrow Streets. Tommy’s electronic engineering studies at the University of Houston served him well, as he and Marty partnered to guide and grow their successful business. Tommy & Marty both wrote the scripts for their own TV commercials, and enjoyed making those commercials at local TV stations. With their business, they traveled internationally and made many friends.
As an avid hunter and fisherman, he was well known among family and friends for having many a fish fry, serving fresh, delicious fried catfish. He also grew a backyard vegetable garden- harvesting, cooking, and serving those delicious vegetables with the fried catfish.
Also, as a private pilot, he had many flying experiences. Tommy was a rockhound, and member of the Central Texas Gem & Mineral Society, winning awards throughout the years for rock work and silversmithing, at their Annual Gem & Mineral Shows in Abilene, Texas.
He was a member of Brook Hollow Christian Church in Abilene, Texas.
Along with his parents, Tommy was preceeded in death by his wife Marty, and Bob and Joe Ann McKissack, his brother and sister-in-law.
Tommy is survived by his Children: Tommy (Darla) McKissack, Cherie McKissack, Cindy McKissack, and Cheryl McKissack Niblo. Grandchildren: Eddie (Stephani) McKissack, Diane (Ishmael) Martinez, Thia(Rowdy) Lee-Buell, Elizabeth (Wilson) Wallace, Catherine (Cole) Brabham, and Will Hawkins; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
