Roy Leon Kelso was born at home in Stith, Texas on December 6, 1937. He finished his race on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 and entered into his eternal reward. In all likelihood, the party up there has been a lot louder since his arrival.
For over 50 years, he stewarded the land to produce crops that fed and clothed families around the world. On June 13, 1971, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Whiteside of Breckenridge, Texas. They shared a deep commitment built of the bedrock of an unwavering faith in a faithful, loving God. They loved and laughed and served through famine and drought, through harvest and feast, and became a picture of diligence, resilience and faith.
A lifelong member of the Churches of Christ, Leon served as a deacon, children’s Sunday School teacher, and occasional burger griller or hayride driver. Leon was best known for his ready smile, his infectious laugh and a mischievous gleam dancing in those bright blue eyes. Joy was his strength, his hobby and his gift.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mary Kelso, brother Derrell Kelso, sister Marilyn “Madie” Power, and beloved wife Carolyn. “Grandaddy” is survived by daughter Cara Soto and her husband Robert, and their children Elijah and Rowin; son Caleb Kelso and his wife Kristin, and their children Caleb Jr., Joshua and Kimberly.
Visitation will be hosted by Elliott-Hamill Funeral Home on Thursday, October 3 from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Memorial services will be held at Oldham Lane Church of Christ at 10:00 on Friday morning, October 4. A private graveside service for family members will follow at Stith Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oldham Lane Church of Christ or the Stith Cemetery Association.
