Roy V “Hoss” Allen passed away from this earth into Heaven, Saturday, May 11, 2024. Services celebrating his life will be Tuesday, May 21, at 11 AM, in the chapel of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, Texas, with his grandson Zac Allen officiating. A private family burial will be at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
Hoss was born in China Grove, Texas, October 31, 1923, to Roy Thomas and Willie Vista Allen. He had one brother, Matthew Allen, who proceeded him in death. He lived an idyllic life in this small community surrounded by family. He graduated from Colorado City High School as a star athlete, excelling in football.
Hoss eagerly enlisted into the military to fight for his country in World War II. He was a gunner on a B24 that was shot down over Austria where he was captured and became a prisoner of war. He was eventually liberated by Patton’s Third Army. Hoss was a decorated war hero, and he had many stories from that time. He was a true hero.
After his return to the United States, he met the most beautiful girl, Codie, with whom he celebrated 75 years of marriage before her death in 2022. They raised two wonderful sons, Randy and Mark, who they followed across Texas watching all their sporting events. They were their joy. Hoss worked for Halliburton in Abilene for many years until starting his own service business, Allen Wireline Service, making many friends and earning a respected reputation in the industry. He had a strong work ethic but also knew how to enjoy life. Many trips were made in their motor homes, traversing the US. They loyally followed everything their six grandchildren were involved in, rarely missing a thing. Hoss loved Ranger baseball, Highland Park football, hunting, and fishing.
He celebrated his 100th birthday in October 2023, surrounded by family and friends at Wesley Court, where he lived out his last years. The Texas Rangers commissioned a #100 jersey to commemorate this milestone. It was a special day.
Hoss left his family a beautiful legacy for how to live a good, honorable life. He is survived by his sons, Randy (Carolyn) of Dallas, Texas and Mark (Michelle) of Graham, Texas; his grandchildren, Zac Allen (Jennie), Ashley Flowers (Pete), Lane Allen, Jake Allen (Courtney), Matt Allen, Hubbell Allen (Larissa); 15 great-grandchildren, Conner, Kate Summers (Charlie), Caroline, and Cooper Allen, Paul, Carolyn Codie, James, and Drew Flowers, Luke, Charlotte, Sadie, Hannah, Abigail Codie, Emery, and Laurel Allen; and his sister-in-law Francene Noah.
The family would like to thank Touching Hearts Home Health and a very special thank you to Stephanie Potter for her tender care of Hoss and for her kindness and friendship to him and our family.
