Robert Benton Collins, 80, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014 in Abilene, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South in Abilene.
“Bob” Collins was born August 5th, 1933 in Bennettsville, S.C. While still a child, he was afflicted with polio and fought the effects of that disease his entire life. During his lifetime Bob was involved in a variety of activities including local politics. He served one term on the Matthews, N.C. City Council and narrowly lost a bid for Mayor in the late 1970’s. He was also involved in scouting and served as a District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America. In addition, he spent several years as a Certified Lecturer of a Masonic Lodge in North Carolina.
Bob is survived by his children: Ken Collins of Clover S.C., Debbie Minder of Carolina Shores, N.C., Kim Skaradzinski of Monroe, N.C., Cindy Mullis of Charlotte, N.C. and Jeff Collins of Abilene, Texas. Bob is also survived by his sisters Bonnie Montgomery and Sarah Hornbuckle, as well as twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wonderful wife Betty Jean Thrower, his sister Doris McKnight and his first-born child Robert Douglas Collins.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Meals on Wheels Plus Inc., 717 N 10th, Abilene, Texas 79601.
