Robert M. Ball, age 92, passed from this life into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 3:00p.m. in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South, Abilene. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 18, 2015 from 6:00p.m. to 7:30p.m. at the funeral home.
Robert was born to Mary and John Ball of Oppy, Kentucky on November 20, 1922. He served in the U.S. CCC’s in 1941. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corp and was an aerial gunner on a B-17. In 1944 he was sent overseas and took part in the invasion of Europe. He was grounded to make room for a bomb and his plane, the ABC’s ACES flew several missions and never returned. He later worked for civil service after his departure from the Air Force. Robert was awarded several ribbons and medals for his services.
In 1952, he married Amanda (Bobbie) Ferrell and they have two children, Glenn (Jeanette) Ball, and Gail (Gary) Garner. Robert and Bobbie both accepted Jesus as their Savior together in 1967. Robert exemplified his love of Jesus with the utmost integrity. He was an active member of Broadview Baptist Church in Abilene.
Dad had a photographic memory and even at the age of 92, he loved to recite the alphabet forwards and backwards and expanding his vocabulary daily. He continued to pray on his knees for his family and our nation.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie; son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Jeanette Ball; daughter and other “son”, Gail and Gary Garner; his grandchildren, Kimberly Garner, Chris and Dr. Erin Garner, Amber Ball, Emory Meyers, Aubrey Beber and Jon, and Kevin and Sarah Ball; and his great-grandchildren, Ethan Garner and soon-to-be-born baby brother, Ryan Joseph Garner.
Special thanks to the entire medical and cafeteria staff at ARMC and Hendrick Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broadview Baptist Church.
