Services celebrating her life and legacy will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Hillcrest Church of Christ. Interment will follow in Clyde Cemetery in the Wellborn family plot. Visitation will be held on Monday evening also at the church from 5-7:00 PM.
Patty Rae was born on September 18, 1954, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She was the oldest child born to the late Roosevelt “Rosey” Louis Castille and Patsy La Ray (Brown) Castille. Being the oldest, Patty Rae helped raise her younger siblings. She was raised in a military family, consequently she attended thirteen different schools growing up. Her family finally settled in Merkel where she graduated from Merkel High School in 1972. She married the love of her life, Walker “Dub” Barron Wellborn, Jr. on April 12, 1974. She briefly moved to Wyoming following Dub’s career and then spent several years in Houston. Patty Rae and Dub eventually made Abilene home and raised their children here. She devoted herself to being a stay-at-home mom doing all she could to instill values in her children that they still cherish today. Her heart was not only open to her children but to their friends as well. This loyalty and concern extended to all her friendships. She cherished the relationships that she made through the years.
Patty Rae loved art from a young age. While raising her family, she continued working and developing her skills as an artist. She traveled to be a part of many events to show her work, many times with her children in tow. Patty Rae truly paid her dues to become a self-made artist. While raising a family, giving art lessons, working odd jobs to ultimately being able to flourish in her beloved profession on her own terms. Her work was always memorable and can be found in numerous locations locally and abroad. Her capacity grew as she became “Grammy.” She loved creating memories with her precious grandchildren.
Patty Rae was an active part of in her Abilene community. She was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ. She was also involved with other organizations within the art community such as The Center for Contemporary Arts, Studio 13, Creative Arts Club, and Calypso Gallery.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her in-laws, Walker Wellborn, Sr. and Jewel Juanita Wellborn.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Walker “Dub” B. Wellborn, Jr.; her children, Jason Barron Wellborn and his wife Sarah, Kevin Walker Wellborn and his wife Alison, Debbie La Rae Williams and her husband John, Scott Louis Wellborn and his wife Tatiana, and Abigail Lynn Wellborn; grandchildren, Jordan, Maeghyn, James, Jimmie, Justin, Maya, William, and Dayna; her siblings, Susie Price, Steve Castille, Jamie Castille, Ben Castille, Judy Knight and Jason Castille; her sister-in-law, Brenda Wilde; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and her beloved Abilene Community.
