God’s servant and our beloved deaconess, Mary Lee Scroggins Robinson was born August 21, 1915 in Marlin, Texas (Falls County) to parents, Robert “Lee” Humphrey and Minnie Ella Williams-Humphrey. She was the first of ten children born to this union, three sisters, four brothers, and a set of still born twins. Mary Lee went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 31, 2010 at a local nursing center.
Mary Lee attended Booker T. Washington Colored School where she met and married the late L.B. Scroggins. To this union six girls were born. All preceded her in death as infants, except one, Earthel Scroggins Bowles, of the city. “Mother Robinson”, as she was affectionately called, met and married Deacon Hodges Lee Robinson, June of 1970, and acquired three more step-children from Deacon Hodges ~ Earline, Merlene, and Ted Robinson. She accepted Christ at an early age at Marlin Baptist Church, Marlin, Texas, where she was active until she grew up and later moved to Abilene, Texas, where she was an active member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Many years ago, upon moving to Abilene, Mary Lee sang in a group named "Imperial Singers", directed by Sammie Curtis. The group traveled to many cities throughout Texas to perform.
Mary Lee faithfully served the Lord in Macedonia Baptist Church where she attended Sunday School, Ministers and Deacons Wives, Bible Band, and sang in the Choir. She loved her church and participated in “Motherin” all the young people and providing “Jams”, “Jalapeño Jelly”, and “Hellish Relish” to all who could handle it. At one time, Mary Lee was awarded “Salt of the Earth” recognition.
She loved everybody, and did not hesitate to lend her support. Mary Lee had kind and devoted friends, whom she loved very much. Her favorite past time was mothering her “gold dust” twin and sister, “Mother Mator Schells”. Her efforts were endless in the community, as she worked for eighteen years as a practical nurse and nurse’s aide at Hendrick Hospital (now Medical Center). Mary Lee worked as a Private Duty Nurse. She also worked at Abilene Supported Living (State School) for many years, until the health of her husband caused her to retire.
Her parents; three sisters, four brothers, and the twins; and her husband, Deacon Hodges Lee Robinson preceded her in death.
Mother Robinson leaves to mourn one devoted daughter, Earthel Scroggins Bowles; one sister, Mator B. Schells; three grandchildren, Shon Bowles (Traci) of Brea, California, Terrence Bowles of Abilene, Texas, and Nichelle Whitley of Inglewood, California; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two adopted children, Donna Kaye and Billy Don Terrell; a special daughter (the baby), “Sandra Johnson” of Abilene; a special son, “Roy Alexander” of Abilene; and many beloved relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at Macedonia Baptist Church with Matthew Lubin, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in City Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. The family will receive friends at a visitation 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Deaconess Robinson will be missed by all who knew her as she fondly reminded us of Proverbs 3:6 ~ “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy path”.
