Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 Highway 277 South, with Reverend Keith Clifton officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (prior to the service on Tuesday) at the funeral home.
John was born in Pecos, Texas on November 9, 1947 to John Carlyle Wells and Johnnie Rozell (Scott) Wells. He was raised in Andrews, and graduated from East Central State College in Oklahoma where he attended on a football scholarship. John married Virginia Hutton on May 30, 1969 in Ada, Oklahoma. While serving as a Spec 4 in the U.S. Army for two years in Hanau, Germany, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; Expert (Rifle M-16).
John and his family moved to Abilene in 1973 where he was employed by the Nabisco Company and John Deere Company. In August of 1974, he had applied for a history teaching and coaching job in San Angelo, Texas, and was involved in a car accident on his way home that left him paralyzed.
His grandparents and parents preceded him in death.
John is survived by his daughter, Pamela Wells of Hawley, Texas; his sister, Judy Tanner and her husband, Phil, of Hawley; his nephew, Michael Tanner and wife, Trish, of Austin, Texas; great-nephews, Tyler and Nicholas Tanner of Eden, Texas; an aunt, Linnie Parker of Midland, Texas; and many cousins.
