John Anthony Greer, 67, born as Anthony John Borysewicz, Jr. passed away unexpectedly at his home in Abilene, Texas on Friday, April 17, 2015. Funeral services will be 10:00a.m., Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory St. with Pastor Mike Hill officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at 12:00p.m. Visitation will be Tuesday evening, April 21, 2015 from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. at the funeral home.
John was born in St. Louis Missouri on January 6, 1948. His stepfather was career military and the family moved frequently from base to base. John excelled in academics, was fervently active in all sports, and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating from Andress High School in El Paso in 1966, he enlisted in the Army and served in Germany. Upon returning to the states, he married Marcia, the love of his life on April 16, 1970 and began a family. In 1984, they moved to Abilene where John opened his own oilfield service supply store, Savage Sales, Inc. He persevered through many economic booms and busts to run his company until the day he died.
After celebrating his 45th wedding anniversary on April 16th, he went gently into the night. He was old school but loved technology and new gadgets. With his 6’4” frame, he gathered everyone under his wing and showed them unconditional love, kindness, and generosity. He was Marcia’s knight in shining armor and a devoted father and grandfather. His family roots were in northeast Arkansas, and he loved visiting his relatives and enjoying the countryside, but he never wanted to leave Texas. He was a decent human being who believed in God, America, the Cowboys, the Rangers, and NASCAR. He spent many hours in medical facilities and enjoyed playing Sudoku on his cell phone to help him maintain his patience and dignity during his years of failing health. If you knew him, you had a friend. We will miss him dearly.
Preceding him in death were his mother, Ava Jane Greer; his father, Tony Borysewicz; and his younger brother, James Greer. John is lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Marcia; his three daughters, Jeni Lapoint and husband, Cary, Misty Greer, and Tiffany Greenwood; eight grandchildren, Quinn, Sophie, Chloe, Bailey, McKinley, Paige, Madelyn, and Audrey; his brothers, Dan and Richard Greer; and his sisters, Millie Todd and Debbie Sammons.
