Joe attended Stephenville schools and Tarleton College. At the age of 15 he started a gravel and trucking business. He served two years in the US Navy during WWII.
He married Mary Louise Garrett on July 12, 1952. They raised their three children in Abilene, Texas, and together they built their business, Contract Paving Co. Joe and Mary enjoyed their many friendships, traveling, and dancing at both the Petroleum Club and Abilene Country Club until Mary’s death on March 6, 2000.
Joe married Betty Ellis in 2001. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Abilene, and a supporter of Ben Richey Boys Ranch.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; a brother, Donald Lindley; a sister, Nita Murl Lindley; and wife, Betty.
He is survived by a daughter, LouAnn Lindley of Austin and her husband, Thomas Gay; their children, Gabe, Faith, Levi, and Luke; sons, Jay Lindley of Costa Rica, and Tom Lindley of Abilene and his wife, JDana; their children, Alex of Lubbock, and Will and Livi of Abilene, four great-grandchildren; a sister, Peggy Edwards of Abilene; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 10:00a.m. at First Baptist Church, 1333 North 3rd, in Abilene. Reverend Palmer McCown will officiate the service and Reverend David Black will give the eulogy and message. A reception will follow the service at the church. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South. Pallbearers will be Ben Aguirre, Wendell Fennell, Winston Gann, David Lackey, Sonny Laird, Luke Lindley, and Will Lindley. Visitation will be Friday, October 18, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 US Hwy 277 South.
