James Arthur Newberry, Sr. passed away on the morning of June 8, 2024 at Hendrick Hospital. He was born in Merkel, Taylor County, Texas on July 13, 1936. James was raised in Buffalo Gap, Texas and for the last years, he suffered the effects on COVID with congestive heart failure and AFib.
James truly enjoyed reading western books and absolutely loved his Kindle. He led a full life, was in the military, a truck driver, worked at Oil Transport, was owner of C.A.T. Construction, and later in life built bird houses and benches, which he truly enjoyed. James was a watercolor artist and won several ribbons at the West Texas Fair. In his later years, he enjoyed learning more about his ancestry. James had a soft heart, which he showed especially to his “Peanut Butter” cat. They were constant companions. He enjoyed using his hands in construction and loved teaching Jerry Lackey, Steffanie Lackey-Lemmons, and Casey Lackey about construction.
He fathered two children: James Newberry, Jr. and Chera Hickenson; and was a stepdad to Jerry Lackey, Jr., Steffanie Lackey-Lemmons, and Casey Lackey, who he raised as his own.
James was proceeded in death by Arthur Newberry and Cleveland Pauline (Hammack) Newberry; his brother Jerry Don Newberry, and stepfather Bob Murphy.
Survivors of James include: Glenda Jo (Heuermann/Lackey) Newberry wife of 43 years; Casey Don Lackey “Turk,” James “Shorty,” Jerry D. Lackey “Wolf,” Chera Hickenson, Steffanie J. Lackey-Lemmons “Bone;” two sisters Bobbie Jean and Paula Ann; a brother Royce Wayne Murphy; and several cousins, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He wished to be cremated and no services. James passed away surrounded by those who loved him. He will be truly missed by his Glenda and his kids Casey Don Lackey, Jerry Don Lackey, Jr., James Newberry, Jr., Chera, and Steffanie.
