Inurnment will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 23, 2012, in Texas State Veterans Cemetery, directed by Community Memorial Funeral Home, 1443 North 2nd Street, Abilene.
Gordon was born March 22, 1924 to Bainard and Jessie Gray in Lamesa, Texas. He graduated from high school at the age of 16. Gordon went to work for the railroad as a telegrapher. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18 where he made Platoon Sgt. and received several decorations and a field promotion to 2nd Lt.; called back to duty during the Korean War; later received permanent promotions to 2nd Lt., 1st Lt., and finally to Captain while in the USMC Reserves. Gordon graduated from the New Mexico School of Mines (now called New Mexico Tech) with a BS in Petroleum Engineering, receiving continuing education in Petroleum Engineering and Geology for the following 60 years. He was licensed as a Professional Engineer in multiple states as a part of his consulting business. Gordon was employed in 1949 by Condor Petroleum in Abilene. He was very active in the oil and gas industry in Abilene for the next 60 years. He was a proud member and officer of the Abilene Petroleum Club. Gordon was a VERY proud ex-USMC (once a Marine, always a Marine). He was also a proud member of MENSA. Gordon later started several companies in Abilene including McDonald and Gray, Gray Engineering, Bluebonnet Exploration, and a few others.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Jane; four sons, Donald Gray, Robert Gray, James Lynn Gray, Louis Paul Gray, and daugther Joanne Gray Mathis; step-children, Julie Gilliland of Ft. Worth, TX and Steve Williamson of Midland, TX, and multiple grandchildren.
