Gertrude Evans Holder...we knew her as Gertrude, 96, passed away on April 27, 2014 in Coleman, TX. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 10:00a.m. in the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 Hwy 277 South with Bob Martin from Elm Street Church of Christ (in Coleman) officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 9:00a.m. Wednesday, prior to the service. Serving as pallbearers will be, Travis Evans, Dustin Kiser, Shawn Lovelady, Tanner Doughty, Steve Evans, and Randy Stevens.
Gertrude was born on February 2, 1918 in Granbury, TX to John Madison Evans and Sarah Ruby McKee. She married Joe Neal “Buck” Holder on November 1, 1941, in Abilene, TX. Gertrude enlisted in United States Coast Guard on March 23, 1943, reported for active duty in Cleveland, Ohio. She was honorably discharged on October 13, 1945. Following her discharge from the Coast Guard, she was employed outside the home for many years; however, she was primarily a housewife and loving wife to her husband, Buck.
At the time of her death, she resided at Holiday Hill Nursing Home in Coleman, Texas.
She was always complimented about her youthful appearance and kind/sweet disposition. She never wanted to be a burden to anyone, and hated asking for help even when she could no longer do things for herself. Gertrude loved being outdoors and enjoying nature. She was a member of the Woodlawn Church of Christ in Abilene.
Moral compass was her love of God and her family. Values were truth, integrity, love of her country, patriotism, loyalty to family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Joe N. Holder in 1997; siblings, Velva Lula (Deede) Evans Anderson, William Ernest Evans, Emma Maye Evans Huslage, Leonard Martin Evans, John Louie Evans, Roby B. Evans, Ray D. Evans, and Ruby Waunda Evans Stevens; and a nephew, Lowery Evans.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Sandra Kay Casey, Steven Lynne Evans and his wife, Barbara, Darla Evans McCollum and her husband, Barry, Melanie Evans Davis and her husband, Vern, Tammy Shields and her husband, Tim, Kathy Guidry and her husband, Mark, and Beverly Evans White and her husband, John; nephews, Jeff Evans, David Stevens, Randy Stevens and his wife, Sherry, Eric Stevens and his wife, Marcia, Michael Huslage and his wife, Nancy, Julia Evans, Karen Evans and Cheryl Evans; numerous other family members and friends who loved her and will miss her greatly.
