Elizabeth (Libby) Hooks Mathis, 80, died July 27, 2020 in Abilene, Texas. Born Winifred Elizabeth Mitchell on April 21, 1940, in Brooksville, FL, she was the daughter of Col. Robert C. and Winifred Mitchell. As the daughter of a career Army officer she lived in Maryland, Alaska, El Paso, and Florida as a child.
Libby married Jerry Hooks on June 4, 1960. To this union were born two daughters. In 1989 she married Jack Mathis and they made their home for many years in Proctor, Texas. Libby was the bookkeeper for Bradberry Feeds in Dublin, TX for over 30 years, retiring in 2004. In 2005 she and Jack moved to Granbury, TX, were she worked part time for her daughter, Tammy, at Freedom Physical Therapy. She retired a second time in 2015. Libby moved to Wisteria Place Rehabilitation Center in Abilene in 2020.
Libby was a master seamstress who loved to sew, quilt, cook, fish, and entertain. Known as Nana Wee by her grandchildren, she was a positive force in their lives and for many years held her “Camp Nana Wee” in the summers. Her sense of humor was illustrated by her extracting a promise from her daughters to have the following inscribed on her headstone: “Here lies Wee. She lived, she loved, she laughed, she cried, and then one day she up and died.”
Libby was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Mathis. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Catherine Mitchell, and brothers, Robert and Ralph Mitchell.
Libby is survived by her daughters, Tammy Smith and husband Lyndell of Granbury; Julie Keller and husband Ron of Baird; step-daughter Jackie Hopmann and husband Randy of Tyler; and her sister Linda Mitchell and life partner Kim Oberman of Las Vegas. She is also survived by her grandchildren Rowdy Keller of Azle; Calvin Smith of Austin; Mackenzie Huff of Bellville; Maggie Smith of San Antonio; and great grandchildren Kade, Ava, and Cooksey.
Graveside services will be held at Cow Creek Cemetery near Dublin, TX on July 30, 2020, with Don Kirkland officiating. Funeral services were under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home in Abilene.
