Edith Marie Smith

Edith Marie Williams-Smith of Abilene, Texas departed March 24, 2016. She was born in Galveston, Texas on March 5, 1945 to Howard and Mae Cleo Goynes Williams, who preceded her in death. The oldest of four children, she received her education at Woodland Elementary, and Lincoln High of LaMarque, Texas. Edith continued her education at Prairie A&M University receiving a Bachelor Degree in Biology and a Masters in Counseling. Not satisfied, she attended Prince George Community College of Maryland School of Nursing where she obtained her B.S.N.

As a child, Edith accepted Christ and was baptized at Bell Zion Baptist Church of LaMarque. She has been an active member of Mt. Zion First Baptist Church since 1993. Edith taught several years during Vacation Bible School and is a Deaconess. She served on Mt. Zion’s Pastor Search Committee. Edith worked diligently with the Bert Hammond Scholarship Committee. She served as the Chairperson of Mt. Zion’s Finance Committee.

Edith worked at Prince George Hospital and Hendrick Hospital as a Charge Nurse and Nurse Educator. Edith was greatly involved in the community as a Member of the Kiwanis of Abilene. She was a Board Member of Harmony House of Abilene. Edith taught Biology for the Hitchcock Independent School District of Hitchcock, Texas. She was a substitute teacher for the Abilene Independent School District and while in Hawaii, she was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Sis was a member of Stars of Grace.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Douglas R. Williams. Edith leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, William A. Smith; one son, Dwayne E. Smith; one granddaughter, Lakeia S. C. Smith (Courtney) of McKinney Texas; one grandson, Darren L. Smith and his wife, Katy (expecting a child) of Dallas, Texas; and two great-grandsons, Tavion Lamar Smith and Cameron Andrea Dowdy of McKinney, Texas. She leaves two brothers, Howard L. Williams of Abilene, and Ralph W. Williams of LaMarque, Texas. She also leaves several sisters-in-law, Dorothy of League City, Hazel of Abilene, and Karen T. Rose of LaMarque; uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
