

Dorothy Bailey John, 93, passed away Monday, December 12, 2011, at a local nursing center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 15, 2011, at the Elliott-Hamil Chapel of Faith, 5701 Hwy 277 South, with Dr. B.J. McMichael officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Dorothy was born on May 28, 1918 to Richard and Rena Bailey in Abilene, TX. She attended Abilene schools and graduated from Abilene High School in 1937. Dorothy married James Rubin John on January 9, 1942 and was a lifetime resident of Abilene. She worked at the Taylor County Courthouse, Dyess AFB, KTXS TV, Rubin John Texaco, and Sam's Club. Dorothy enjoyed walking and visiting with others.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; three sisters, Nelda Oden, Dixie Webster, and Peggy Biggers.
Survivors include her daughter Sharron Murphy and husband Pat; one grandchild Shayla Rutledge; three great-grandchildren Brittney Rutledge, Ivy Rutledge, and Cara Benavides; nieces Sabra Hill and Merry Shannon; and nephews Raymond Oden, Clifford Oden and Mike Oden.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Home Instead, 240 S. Mockingbird Blvd., Abilene, TX 79605 or to Hendrick Hospice, 1682 Hickory St., Abilene, TX 79601.
