Dennis Walter Wherry, 90, of Abilene passed away on Monday May 28, 2018 at a local hospice facility. Funeral services will be held at 10am on Friday June 1, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial following in the Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a visitation on Thursday evening from 6 to 8pm with a rosary starting at 7pm at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South.
Dennis was born on October 20, 1927 to Melvin F. Wherry and Mary L. Rudd. He was a corn farmer at his family home in Orient, South Dakota. He joined the US Air Force at the age of 24 in 1951. He served his country proudly for 26 years and 4 days. He was an NCO & Officers club manager and loved to serve his fellow officers with the best entertainment. He retired from the USAF in January of 1977.
He and his wife, Eulalia "Lola", met in 1976. They married on August 27, 1977. The couple had two daughters, Adelina and Lisa. He served in civil service for over 30 years. He was a dedicated Roman Catholic and his faith carried him through all of life's obstacles. He was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus. He was a Eucharistic minister, Sunday school teacher and usher.
Dennis was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He always leaned on his faith and shared his belief fiercely with anyone around. His heart was full of love and he always had wise words and a joke to share to brighten the day. His laughter was contagious and he was easy to love.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Rachel Charron; grandson, Chad Devinney; and 5 siblings.
Survivors include his wife, Eulalia "Lola" Wherry; daughters, Adelina N. Parks and husband Dewey, Lisa F. Wherry and fiance Lucas Rodriguez, Mary Devinney and husband Bill, Michele Hoover and husband Tom, Rachel Schlepp and husband Jim and Marlyce Coffey; sons, Jerry Wherry and wife Carol, Thomas Wherry and wife Patti and Joe Wherry; sister, Donna Roth; 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the VA and Hendrick Hospice for the care Dennis was given. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church or to Hendrick Home Health.
