David Rodriguez, 61, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016. Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 1, 2016 at 1:00p.m. in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St., Abilene.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. at the funeral home.
David was born in New York City, NY on May 1, 1954 to Victor Rodriguez and Carmen Rios Rodriguez. David was a USAF Vietnam Veteran. In 1975, while serving as KC-135 crew chief, he was having a normal day performing maintenance on his aircraft. The next thing he knew, the auxiliary power unit was on fire at the rear of the aircraft and the crew was evacuating. After calling the fire department and assessing the situation, he began to put out the fire. Keep in mind the purpose of this aircraft is to refuel other planes in-flight, so it was “loaded” with fuel. After going through almost three huge fire extinguishers, the fire was under control. His action undoubtedly prevented what could have been a major disaster. He was a hero.
Preceding him in death was his father. Survivors include his mother, Carmen; his brothers, Victor Anthony Rodriguez and wife, Gladys, and Edward Dennis Rodriguez and wife, Lupe; a niece, Jacquilene Rodriguez; a nephew, Victor A. Rodriguez III; and a great-nephew, Victor A. Rodriguez, IV.
