Charles D. Barbee, 88, passed away on April 29, 2014 at his residence in Abilene, TX. Funeral services will be 2:00p.m., Friday, May 2, 2014 in the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory St., with Dr. Don Greenway officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel, Texas under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6 to 8p.m. at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. Serving as pallbearers will be, Chance Perkins, Garret Hutcheson, Kyler Barron, Chad Stone, Peyton Stone, Charlie Barbee, Jayce Barbee, and Justin Gregory.
Charles was born September 6, 1925 in Merkel, Texas to the late Johnny Willis Barbee and Ethel Mae Coats. He married Leta Mae Barbee and shared a wonderful marriage of 68 years together.
Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a diver. He was self-employed as the successful business owner of Barbee Plumbing here in Abilene. Charles was very proud that his three sons were able to take over the business. He loved to play golf and adored being able to spend time with his grandkids and great-grandkids.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother; and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Leta Mae Barbee; his children, Eddie Barbee and wife, Vikki of Buffalo Gap, Donnie Barbee and wife, Dodie of Edmond, OK, Diane Bell and husband, Eugene of Baird, and John Barbee and wife, Brandi of Abilene; brother, Johnny Barbee of Abilene; sisters, Thelma Urquhart of Huntsville, TX and Ouida Head of Abilene; twenty grandchildren; and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the Wounded Warriors Association or to West Texas Rehab.
